Woodlawn Project #9: Where's the Beach?

It's been a while since I updated the Woodlawn Project, but it is still ongoing and more imperative than ever as buildings and trees fall weekly. It's our own Amazon Rain Forest debacle within our little pie shaped piece of the Bronx.

This week, I'm going to feature some of the odd houses that look more like they belong on Rockaway Beach or Cape Cod than lining the streets of Woodlawn.

This little house on 235th Street is the perfect example of a style that would look more at home with sand brushing up against the front steps. It was orignally bordered by another house similar to it but, as you can see, it is now got one of the new spit and plastic houses going up right next to it.

Further up the block:

These lovely colorful homes have great front porches where one should be sitting sipping cool drinks with umbrellas and looking out to sea. Whereas, all these face are other houses on the south side of the street.

Then, there is this:

The only house on Peter Place:

Alone among the garages

I don't know what it was originally. It has the awning, the windows and the elevation of a beach house, but it has a lower floor that looks all sealed off. Was it a carriage house orginally? A store?
