Balticon and Sales
MaryAnn Johanson and I were on the outskirts of Baltimore this Memorial Day weekend to attend Balticon 42.
It's been a few years since we were last at Balticon, but we followed our usual pattern: I participated in the Art Show, MaryAnn expounded on geeky movies and geek culture on various panels and we threw our ever-building, increasingly popular "The Bronx Babes' Travelling Creative Salon" party on the Saturday night.
I did fairly well, sales-wise. I sold three paintings, two pieces of jewelry and a print. Not enough to cover even the bar bill but still..... Particularly spirit lifting was the fellow who stopped to tell me he had bought a piece of my work 4 years ago, and still liked it very much. Always satisfying.
Among the pieces that sold were my oldest piece and my newest piece.
Oldest:
This is one of the first jewelry pieces I ever made. It's Sculpy, painted and embedded with stones to make the stars in the contrail. I've brought it to conventions for years, and I almost left it home this time. Then it sold. You can just never tell. As a friend of mine said, "Just keep throwing stuff out there."
Another piece of jewelry that's made its appearance more than a few times was this piece:
which finally sold this past weekend. It is also made of Sculpy, painted and embedded with stones.
Unfortunately, I took the photos of these pieces long before I got my new camera and the colors just don't run very true. The Flying Moon piece is a deep sort of pearly navy blue with multicolored stones. This piece is a pale blue/green moon passing before a very brilliant orange and yellow sun. Now I'll never be able to make a better photo of either of them.
I only make one dragon picture per year, of the Black Dragon (inspired by R.A. MacAvoy's book, Tea With The Black Dragon) usually for Boskone.
This piece made for 2007 didn't sell until this past weekend:

The Black Dragon Ponders His Next Move
as did the one I made for this year's 2008 Boskone:

The Black Dragon Brings the Year of the Rat
both are scratchboard and colored inks.
The newest piece among those displayed, also made for this year's Boskone, sold this weekend:
I was really pleased that this piece was bought -- especially because I was very excited that this weekend the Phoenix Mars Lander an exploratory robot, landed safely on the Red Planet and had already taken the first pictures and sent them back. Exploration of space and the possibilities of humankind settling on other planets excites me no end.
And last, but not least, I sold one print. This is aIso among the first pieces I did for selling prints at a convention:
Hands of the Creator
All in all, it was a good weekend, despite a few glitches, which aren't worth going into.
One new bit was that, in addition to her usual panel appearances, MaryAnn got to MC the Sunday Night Film Festival at the convention. The Festival was a presentation of short science fiction or fantsy (or fannish) films, some live action, some animated, which were in competition for the audience vote.
Our party was as successful as always -- considering that it is vying for attendance with the Masquerade -- and some really interesting people dropped by, such as: John Hemry (aka Jack Campbell)(and I finally managed to deliver a small sketch I'd made of him a couple of years ago!), the amusing Hildy Silverman who is owner and editor-in-chief of Space and Time magazine, the distinguished Dr. Charles Gannon, writer and scholar (and great fellow for long discussions that run into the middle of the night), Gail Z. Martin, author of the Chronicle of the Necromancer series and many other distinguished and just plain fun people.
We even got interviewed about our Travelling Creative Salon for a podcast, which will be coming up on a computer near you in the next few weeks!
Next convention? We're not sure. The next big one is, of course, Denvention 3 -- World Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention, being held in Denver. There is also Dragon*Con, which several friends have encouraged us to attend. And probably a dozen others we don't even know about.
But, since we're going over the Pond again this fall -- going to Stratford-on-Avon to attend the RSC's production of Hamlet, with David Tennant as the not-so-jolly Dane, and Patrick Stewart as his step-dad uncle, we may be doing some serious penny pinching between now and then. Cons are fun. But they're also expensive.
