Local Art Fridays: Subway Art
The NYC subway system is a marvel of engineering. Really. And I say this as a person who travels on it almost every day of the year, in all kinds of weather and conditions, through all kinds of aggravation, crowds and smells. It can be a bit wearying on days when you're in a rush, or there are delays, and in such a state of mind it is easy to miss some of the lovely bits of artwork that decorate the stations and platforms.
Last summer, on a leisurely stroll up Broadway with my sightseeing sister and nieces, we passed by the Rector Street Station entrance, and saw this fellow:

Blaaah! Train delayed again.
Then I noticed the other heads decorating the entrance. They are made of brass and have a medieval look about them, reminding me vividly of the heads that adorn the buildings all over Oxford, England. (Some day soon, I hope to post some of the more artistic photos I took during my stay there.)

Gotta go to work.

Lunchtime is good.

Friday! Happy Hour!
And the MTA's Arts for Transit is taking care to brighten up a lot more of our platforms and stations. Check out this website for some wonderful samples of the kind of art I'm seeing every day. Next time you're on the subway, look up, look around, look at Art!
