Local Art Fridays: Nike at the Waldorf=Astoria

The Waldorf=Astoria Hotel (actually, the second hotel of that name) has a rather stern and elegant facade on Park Avenue. The hotel is often cited as a classic example example of the Art Deco movement.

The front canopy, is topped by this figure:

I believe it is a representation of the goddess Nike , a symbol of victory (though over what, vis-a-vis the Waldorf=Astoria, I can only imagine: their competitors?)
