Boskone Report

Boskone was a wonderful convention and we had a great time. I didn't sell any artwork, and neither did my niece Meaghan. But MaryAnn Johanson and I had a great time on Friday night visiting with our friends and eating in the delightful "Sauciety," situated in the Westin's lobby.

Later on Friday night, back in our hotel room, Cecilia Tan, writer, editor and Yankee fan deluxe, hosted a launch party for her latest anthology of erotic fiction:

which includes my novella, "The Gantlet." She opened a couple of bottles of champagne, broke out a couple of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies (TM) and opened the door at 10:00 p.m. Two hours, the champagne was gone, the cookies devoured and she'd sold every book on hand. Meanwhile, MaryAnn and I got to socialize, I signed a couple of books, and we did the blahblahblah about our own party the next night. This meant we missed the Art Show reception and our free drinks... but hey! Girls' have to make a living, right?

During the day on Saturday, while MaryAnn was busy on panels, wowing the crowd with her movie erudition, I scoped out the rest of the Art Show, and participated in the general "Death to Peeps" festivities. This is a reference to the works of David Weber, the Author Guest of Honor. In his Honor Harrington series of books, the enemy are called "Peeps". By the time I made it to the arts and crafts division, the pickings were slim. I wound up using a plastic bull, impaling peeps all over the place:

(On Sunday, I also participated in the poetry competition, wherein one was invited to write an ode on the Death of a Peep in the style of a famous poet. Some of the contributions were downright brilliant, especially Esther Friesner's "Stomping On a Peep On a Snowy Evening" -- a perfect takeoff on the Robert Frost poem. My humble contribution was entitled "Death of a Marshmellow Peep" an homage to William Butler Yeats' "Death of an Irish Airman".)

The Saturday night Bronx Babes' Travelling Creative Salon was as good as the one at Arisia in January, which was highly successful. MaryAnn sold a few books and the guests were consistently entertaining, intelligent and fun!

Sunday is always the downer day, as things start to wind down at the convention, the art show has to be taken down and most of the fans make their way home. However, we had a good time hanging with our "peeps" and went to the No Name fish restaurant with the crew. Then, after bidding a fond farewell to the Devney/Kuhn contingent, we went back to the hotel and hung out in the lobby bar. Around 11:00 we made a final sweep of the ConSuite and then to bed. We hit the road at noon the next day and were home by 6:00.

Next convention: Balticon -- Memorial Day Weekend. Connie Willis, one of my favorite authors, is the GoH.
