Loving the Doctor: The Art of Being a Fan

The Doctor: my one true love
Anyone who knows me for any length of time (like more than an hour) knows that I am a follower of The Doctor. The show, of course, is called "Doctor Who" but to those of us intimately acquainted with him, he's known simply as "The Doctor." And here's a quick description:
I’ve seen him.
He’s like fire, and ice, and rage. He’s like the night, and the storm, and the heart of the sun.
He’s ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the Universe.
And he’s wonderful.
And I am totally, completely, truly, madly, deeply in love with the Doctor. He's the strong, confident, exotic, interesting, intelligent, sensistive, adventuring, man of my many dreams. And as soon as he comes by in the TARDIS, I'm outta here. (Of course, I'm not the only one. My best pal, MaryAnn Johanson, film critic, writer and Doctor lover extraorinairre is my biggest rival for the Doctor's affections, and is blogging about the current series on her sites, which you should definitely check out.)
I've written Doctor Who fiction, and the current show (and David Tennant's Doctor) is making it a strong bet I may write more, even if it only stays in my head. (And, in my head, I am already off in time and space having the most amazing adventures.)
But I'm not so self-unaware that I don't appreciate some real DW silliness from other fans. Enter Home On The Strange, a webcomic that I was introduced to today by Bad Astronomy's Dr. Phil Plaitt by way of one of his readers. Phil Plaitt, a straight, astronomer with a wife and family, admits to having a serious man-crush on The Doctor (thus upping the BA's own crush-worthiness as far as I'm concerned) and he posted this comic today:

The limits of my blogging columns make the type face a bit rough, but I urge you to get over to Home on the Strange and read the two parts there (it will look cleaner and not deprive the artists of their own hits). I guarantee if you have a geeky bone in your body, you'll stick around to get hooked on the art of this comic and its take on life, love and obsession among thirty-something geeks!
And not only did I get a good laugh, but I have some new arguments for those proselytizing other belief systems! I believe in The Doctor.

I am really looking forward to seeing the season premier! I know, I'm very late. My dad has it taped though-we're trying to finish all the stargate/sg atlantis' we still haven't finished. I'm upset that Rose isn't in the show anymore but I'm curious to see what happens next! Good I hope?!

paul: i, too, was upset when rose left (and she had the *best* send-off of any companion, ever) but i gotta say, martha has won me over and pretty rapidly too. she isn't a pale imitation of rose (and no pun intended there) and she's a definite stand-in for all of us waiting our turn to ride shotgun in the TARDIS! you'll enjoy the shows, really.
