Woodlawn Project #5: Once There Was a Farm
This fine old house is above street level, which gives it a stately sort of dignity:
House on 236th Street
Until recently there was a very large old oak tree at the corner of the property, but when they built an addition to the house (around the far right of the picture), they cut that old tree down.
What leads me to suspect it might have been a farm house, or at least a country house, is this structure that is behind the house:
Converted Barn?
which definitely has a barn-like outline. Where the window is now, is probably where a hayloft was, and the wide garage-style doors were probably the original carriage or wagon entry.
Although I was nervous when they cut down the tree and built the addition, the house has actually managed to retain its original feeling of solid farmhouse dignity.
