Comments: When I was younger, I had very, very long hair -- I could sit on it if I chose. (I didn't usually choose to.) I cut it when the first noticeable gray streak appeared. Long gray hair might be nice (Emmy Lou Harris, for instance) but long graying hair, not so much. So I cut it. And it's now completely gray and it's still short.

When it was long, it was a beautiful shade of auburn and I used to braid it with ribbons, or wear it swept up with little flowers in the folds, or, usually, just bend forward, sweep it all up, and then twist it into a knot, stick a few pins in it and go. (Think Gibson Girl style). I sometimes put hairsticks in it. I miss my long hair and sometimes am startled when I catch a glimpse of myself in a store window or a doorway. What happened to my beautiful hair? I wonder. *

I noticed that a lot of women in the science fiction/fantasy community have very long hair and I had them in mind when I made a few sets of hairsticks back in 2004. There were the ones that had books on them, a thistle and shamrock set, Chinese influenced ones and a few others. These were made from paper maiche and I impressed the design from a pair of earrings that I had, painted them green, then lightly rubbed a bronze paint over them. They looked to me like some sort of coin that dragons would use to purchase supplies, or sheep, or virgins, or whatever they needed to get through the day. Well, certainly a Reluctant Dragon would use them.

*Sometimes, however, when I think of all the time I wasted on my hair... Well, I wish I could get some of it back, that's for sure.
