COMMENTS: More Carl Sagan. Still finding myself influenced by the man and his work. In future years, this may become known as my "Carl Sagan Period." The quote from Sagan's Pale Blue Dot: "If our long term survival is at stake, we have a basic responsibility to our species to venture to other worlds." The Pit of Bones is found in a cave in Atapuerca, Spain, where thousands and thousands of animal bones were found at the bottom of a pit. But, together with the animal bones, were thousands of bones and burials of early species of hominids, including the species Homo heidelbergensis, a direct ancestor of the Neanderthals. Our species is related and descended from them. We ventured up from our antecedents in the Pit of Bones. Now our species must venture up from the Earth -- which is another pit of bones.
