Title: Heads / The Morrigan

A few years ago, after my sister Kirsty started working on figure sculpting, I decided to give it a try myself. Only I started with heads and busts. The ancient celts believed the head was the part of the body that housed the soul. Many of their artworks and sculptures incorporated heads into them and there is a church door that is completely surrounded by carved stone heads.

I finished four heads, all based on figures from celtic mythology and stylistically influenced by the figures of the Book of Kells.

Comments: This figure is The Morrigan, sometimes called "Terror", one of the triple goddesses, she is associated with War and Death, but also with fertility and the afterlife. Her familiar creature is the crow in which guise she sometimes appears, particularly at the end of a battle, to escort warriors into the afterlife. I wanted to incorporate these aspects into the figure. Triple goddesses are usually associated with the colors of white, red and black, so I used those colors throughout. Her shoulders are covered with feathers to represent the crow, and her veil is the color of smoke for the thin veil between life and death where she appears to those who will die in battle.

In the center of her forehead is a dark stone for the third eye of the foreknowledge of death. I wanted her not to be a hag or crone, but someone who was dark and beautiful, that warriors would respect and not fear.
