Art News: Warhol for Sale

Andy Warhol’s first solo gallery show was at Eleanor Ward's Stable Gallery in New York in 1962. At that time, a collector bought an Andy Warhol piece entitled “Lemon Marilyn,” paying $250.00 for it.

Even in 1962, $250 probably wasn’t a lot of money, especially after gallery fees and commissions but Warhol was probably delighted that someone bought one of the 13 portraits he had made of Marilyn Monroe after her death -- even if it was for such a low sum.

Well that purchaser (who chooses to remain anonymous) is offering the $250 Warhol for sale through Christie’s of London. The estimated auction price? Over $15 million. Seems a previous Warhol portrait of Marilyn, “Orange Marilyn,” sold last year for $16.3 million.

So, all of you who bought my paintings for their minimal prices in the past few months – hang onto them. You never know.
