Report from Arisia: The Art Show
So, things have been busy to say the least, and I this is the first real chance I've had to sit down and do a report on the Arisia convention and art show. And even this may be hurried. Damned if I can tell you what I'm busy with, though.
First, the big news: SALES!
Yes! I sold three pieces. This is one:
The other two pieces, entitled RAVEN and THE BLACK DRAGON [DINES VEGETARIAN] I never even had a chance to post on this website before they were sold. Which, of course, is my own damned fault. I'm way behind on loading and cropping pictures.
Here's the Panel Set up, with the pictures on the boards:

As close a picture of the Raven as I can make:

On this panel is the Dragon Dines Vegetarian:
And a very fuzzy closeup:

I'm not sure how much the pieces sold for. The sales system is a little complicated, but if they all sold for the minimum bid, I don't even cover my entry and panel fees. Artists also have to pay a membership for the convention, which is kind of a pain because panelists and other convention participants don't have to pay the fee. It's one of the strange inequities of the creative life.
In other news: An Award! I managed to capture the Filk Guest of Honor Award... for what I can only assume is a "Fan Subject" since my painting "The Peace At Arisia (2006)" won the honors:
I'm quite thrilled. I've never won an award at any of these conventions. The painting is the first in a series I've been thinking of doing, consisting of quick and rather impressionistic moments from conventions. I want to link them to well-known art pieces. The "Peace at Arisia" is reminiscent of a late 19th century painting depicting a scene at the Paris Opera House. I've got dozens of ideas. I may, however, not make them as large as the "Peace" -- it's a difficult size to sell.
As usual, I've been beaten to the classical approach punch by several other artists. Omar Rayyan does wonderful paintings of fantastic people which are Rembrandt-inspired and Alan Beck also does lovely "classical" paintings of mice. (Yes, mice -- you have to see them, they're terrific!) So, I don't claim to be original, just unique in that my paintings (if I ever get around to them, of course) will depict "fannish" activities in masterpiece settings.
All in all, it was a very successful convention, and I'll discuss the remainder of the weekend in Part 2: All the Rest
Meanwhile I'll leave you with a couple of con sketches I did during one of MaryAnn's panels:
This is "Misty Pendragon" (her nom de con) a BNF -- Big Name Fan -- who is often at the conventions as a panelist discussing various fannish topics.
The second sketch:

was just an interesting fan, sitting near me at a panel, who was dressed in a totally "mundane" fashion -- except for the little reddish horns sticking out of curly hair.
