Halloween/Samhain - The Celtic New Year

In honor of Samhain, the Celtic New Year, the basis for the modern celebration of Halloween, All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day, I present two masks in my repetoire:

The first is a mask I created for a friend's January birthday:

I was looking to evoke a certain feeling, like ancient spirit masks. I used lots of symbolism from the cold winter months. There's the silver for the base of the mask, with pearls, white ribbons and black and white feathers. The attachments to the ribbons are disks which are the full moon silvery moon on one side and the dark of the moon on the other, two crescent moons, and a sheaf of wheat, symbols of the goddesses that rule the cold wintery months.

Another mask was made for a friend who turned 50. It's entitled: Emerging Victorious To Face Another 50:

This mask had a polymer resin base and was decorated with warrior symbols. The top has a laurel leaf crown, symbol of victory, and there are cherries for the sweetness of life, and a double heart for enduring love.

On both masks I used small mirrors in between the eyes as a symbol of the third eye -- the eye of inner wisdom and strength, but also as a symbol of the personality of the wearer (owner) reflected in the eyes of others.

Both masks are in private collections, and the photos were taken by the owners.
