A Pirate Tale: On Stranger Tides (Murdered by pirates is good!)
In case you're looking for a pirate tale, for this special day, I just finished On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers, published by Babbage Press.

It was, oddly enough, the only book I purchased at WorldCon -- a veritable book lover's paradise. Don't know why -- it certainly wasn't because I didn't want books -- but I think the idea of hauling them home was a bit daunting. However, this one caught my eye in the Dealers' Room, resting on the table at Babbage Press, and I kept finding myself drawn back to it. So, on the last day, just towards the end of the convention, I picked it up.
The story involves a young John Chandagnac, businessman/former puppeteer, making his way to the New World. Just before reaching port, the ship is invaded and conquered by pirates -- but not for loot and bounty. Well, not only for loot, in any event. John finds himself pressed into pirate service, renamed Jack Shandy and off on a wild adventure, which includes magic, zombies, tragedy, murder, love and revenge. As well as relying on old tricks and skills, Jack Shandy discovers in himself a lot of hidden talents and ambitions he never suspected, as well as a thirst for justice and revenge.
Put your peg leg up, pour yourself some grog and settle in for a rousing good tale.
