TITLE : The Black Dragon Takes Tea (and a Cookie)

DATE CREATED: February 2006

COMMENTS: As mentioned, I do a couple of art shows each year that take place at science fiction/fantasy conventions (Boskone, Arisia, Balticon, etc.). A lot of the art that sells really well has to do with faeries, kittens, kittens and faeries, and dragons. My style isn't usually faeries, kittens or dragons. But a few years ago, I read a wonderful book called "Tea With the Black Dragon" by R.A. MacAvoy. Mr. Long (the Dragon in the book) is a Chinese dragon. He has five fingers so he "can write letters to his friends." I was captivated by that image and I've taking to doing *a* dragon picture for Boskone or World Con. They are fast and fun and always of my friend, the Black Dragon. And they always sell. The last few I've done have been on scratchboard, a medium I hadn't used since junior high school. It's great fun, though it does take some careful planning. I do a little enhancement with colored inks and try to give it a bit of whimsey (thus, the cookie). The Chinese characters say "Tea" and "Long Life."
